Ongoing partnerships in a global mission.

The Center for Mission is charged with promoting and coordinating the global mission outreach of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Short-term Immersion

Every summer our office sponsors a short-term immersion trip for those in parish leadership roles.  The trip is intended to help leaders to be more existentially aware of global realities of faithful people living in poverty and vulnerabilities.  Each trip offers time to reflect on what that might mean in terms of our faithful response in our own personal and parish setting.

Trip to Dominican Republic

We are planning a trip to the Dominican Republic for June 16-25, 2009.  Participants will stay with host families who are members of La Sagrada Familia Parish to provide a fuller immersion experience.  We will meet with Fair Tade coffee growers and visit their work-sites.  Visiting the Fair Trade Zone, seeing historical sites and learning the history of the island are also planned.  Liturgies, reflections and a retreat at Playa Esmeralda are all part of this wonderful experience.

Youth Mission

Each summer our office organizes an exciting, faith-deepening Youth Mission experience in a Catholic context.  Youth from a variety of parishes of the archdiocese travel to the Red Lake Nation in northern Minnesota where they engage with the Anishinaabe children, youth and elders.  They learn from the Red Lake elders about their history, spirituality and culture.  Through the connection with St. Mary’s Mission (the only Catholic Mission on a reservation in Minnesota), the youth celebrate the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation in a mission context.  This trip is organized in conjunction with the nationally-recognized YouthWorks organization.

In 2009, the Youth Mission Trip will be July 26-31.  Registration is DUE by January 15th.  For more information, contact Mike Haasl at haaslm@archspm.org or call 651-291-4504.

Partnerships

The Center for Mission has fostered lasting relationships, examples of twinning or global solidarity partnerships, with communities in other countries in an effort to offer experiences of communion and cooperation. This relationship involves mutual visits and long-term sharing that enables the host and visiting communities to discover the deeper meaning of spiritual solidarity. Such a relationship has been fostered with the Diocese of Kitui, Kenya and exists in the Diocese of Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela.

For information specifically related to Twinning and Global Solidarity, contact Mike Haasl at haaslm@archspm.org or call 651-291-4504
